About Us

This website was created and is run by the members of "On yer bike!" (OYB), the U3A Yarra City Bicycle Group.

OYB started in 2014. It's a social, sociable, welcoming, inclusive and non-competitive seniors bike riding group that explores the extensive off-road bike paths networks in Melbourne and Victoria.

OYB has 3 guiding principles:

  • Lycra is optional
  • No one gets left behind
  • Pedalling for pleasure

We always stop for coffee, cake & conversation on our rides and this is an important part of what we do. Rumours that some people only come on rides for the coffee, cake and conversation may well be true.

OYB is not a group for people interested in speed, time splits or competition. Our priorities are friendliness, helpfulness and fun. The group's weekly rides all start at an accessible place - a train station or a central meeting place.

Each ride is led by an experienced leader (with first aid training) who has tested the route and, most importantly, sussed a suitable café for coffee or lunch, and a chat!

We cater for different levels of fitness. Each route finishes near a train station, allowing for riders to return home via train, or those who wish to challenge themselves can return by bike.

Whether the ride has been west, to the wetlands of Altona; south along the bay, past St. Kilda to Mordialloc; east, along the Scotchman's Creek trail to the cafes at Oakleigh; or north, to Coburg Lake and the delights of Turkish sweets and coffee along Sydney Road, there is only one criteria for a good ride: that you're better friends at the end of the ride than you were at the beginning.

We also run several multi-day tours each year using Victoria's world class Rail Trail network
