Edithvale to Mordialloc via Braeside Park

Ride on 13 March 2020

We had 13 riders today, started out at 10.41am and travelled east along Edithvale Rd to the Edithvale Bird-hide.  No birds today, so we continue along the bike path along the wetlands for several hundred metres.  We then travelled through the suburbs of Aspendale Gardens and Waterways, only taking about 1/2 hour to reach Braeside Park.  With all the rain this last month, the park looked fantastic with lots of ducks in the wetlands and very healthy looking heathland.

We enjoyed a stop at the Picnic Ground before we continued our ride down the Cypress Avenue, past the wooden carvings of Australian animals.  Back through Waterways and then back along a canal & Mordialloc Creek, before we arrived at the cafe at Mordialloc. The trip was about 20 kms.

Though the weather stayed in the 20s, the wind was against us most of the way which I really noticed when some of us decided to cycle from Mordialloc to Sandringham.  Even though it was only an extra 10 kms - I felt like it was an extra 20 kms! We luckily missed the rain and I want to thank you all for sharing this lovely ride with me.

Williams Landing to Altona via Skeleton Creek

Ride on 6/3/2020

Ten OnYerBikers arrived at the cold and windy Williams Landing Station ready to roll down the ramp to find Skeleton Creek and ride to Williamstown. We headed down the western side of the creek as had luckily been planned. The approach to the bridge over the creek to ride on the other side was under water. This was a portent of things to come. Anyway the western side is prettier as you get better views of the creek itself, plus the wetlands on that side. At the end near Sanctuary Lakes we crossed the creek pausing to admire the great views of the city.

Riding on to the Cheatham Wetlands we saw lots of birds. At the top of the 100 Steps of Federation we read out Rodney's fascinating history segment. Then it was on to the usual excellent coffee and conversation in Altona.

We chose the beach route rather than the lake route for the next leg of the ride. We headed out to Altona Wetlands where there were (ominously) a couple of parts of the path with giant puddles. Oh dear! At Kororoit Creek the ford was under fast flowing water. So we decided to go around this. Sadly, when we crossed the railway line to head up to Millers Rd, that path was flooded too. Cutting our losses we completed a circuit of Altona Wetlands and headed back to Seaholme Station.

The riding weather was very pleasant with lots of sunny breaks. Interestingly, it poured with rain just after we arrived back at Flinders Street.
